Nikki Johnson was born in 1974 as the second of three daughters to a career military father. It was on this overseas that Nikki discovered her love for reading and writing. It was during this time that she wrote her first short story, The Mugger. Once back in the U.S., Nikki continued to cultivate this love of writing.

In 1994, Nikki joined the "family business" when she received her commission in the United States Army Reserves from New Mexico Military Institute. In 1996 Nikki began attending The University of Texas at El Paso where she completed classes in children's literature. In 1999 she earned a bachelor's degree from Park University and was selected for active duty.

Her duty assignments included Ft. Carson, Colorado; Ft. Lee, Virginia; and Ft. Bliss, Texas. In 2001 she deployed to Camp Doha, Kuwait in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. In 2003, the Johnson family suffered an emotional blow when older sister, Shoshana Johnson, was captured and held as a POW during the early months of Operation Iraqi Freedom. In May 2005, Nikki resigned her commission. She lives in El Paso, Texas with her two children.
